A plain ruffled dress may be made without a muslin slip foundation. Make plain skirt of amber crepe paper, using 1 1/2yds. for fullness. Add four 4" wide ruffles*, the upper one about 3" below waistline. Finish with a narrow band of crepe paper*.

Sew a tight-fitting bodice* of 2 thicknesses to the skirt. Add yellow ribbon shoulder straps. Fasten with snap fasteners.

Make a foundation of brown crepe paper for the butterfly's body like a slip-over* shaped like Fig. H. The grain should go up and down, so it must be pieced*. Cover with crushed crepe paper*. Turn surplus over and paste to back of foundation. Sew ribbons at waistline to tie in place*.

Make wings of tarlatan with pattern, Fig. J. Fold a 2" wide strip of brown crepe paper like bias tape to 1/2" and stitch over outside edges of wings.

Cut spots from Gummed Crepe, Figs. K and L. Stick back to back on wings. Gather wings and sew to back of body in correct position so that wings may be tied to the arms with narrow ribbon.

Cover 1" wide; 23" long strip firm wrapping paper on both sides with gold paper. Fasten in correct head size. Wrap a 22" piece of wire with a very narrow strip of gold paper*.  Bend in half and sew to front of band. Bend ends into position illustrated.

Make foundation cap of double thickness of amber crepe similar to the foundation for the frog's head, using pieces 161/ deep and slanting
to slightly wider than the head size at bottom. Seam slanting ends. Double and cut out for face, Fig. E. Gather at top, Fig. F.

Cut strips of amber and brown 3" wide into rows of pointed feathers 1" wide, 1 1/2" deep*. Snip on pointed ends, Fig. G. Stitch to foundation
in alternating overlapping rows, using the sewing machine for the first 5 or 6 rows and hand sewing for the remainder. Gather strips slightly at top to allow them to lie smoothly.

Cut beak, Fig. 6, wattles, Fig. 7, and comb, Fig. 8, page 31, from mat stock. Cover comb and wattles with red, beak with brown crepe paper. Cut comb double, paste together and turn tabs out at either side to paste to head. Paste all in place, as shown in the illustration. Tint ends of feathers. with brown crayon or water color paint applied with a very dry brush. Sew ribbon ties in place.

If a complete costume is needed, follow the instructions for the Robin. Vary shape and sizeof wings, tail and colorings as necessary.

Make a pattern, Fig. 2, page 31. Cut mat stock. Crease on dotted lines. Cover with crushed green crepe paper*, applying the paste all over the mat stock and pressing the crepe paper down on it firmly. Use dark and light green as illustrated.

Turn surplus over and paste to under side. Overlap at back and fasten with paper fasteners. For eyes, make 2" balls of crepe paper. Cover

Cut strips of brown crepe paper 3 1/4" wide into rows of pointed "feathers,"* each section about I" wide, 3 1.2" deep, pointed at the end, snipped on edges, Fig. H. Beginning at the bottom of the pants, sew in overlapping alternating rows, the tips of the first coming below the foundation. Continue until the foundation is entirely covered.

Make darts in the blouse, which should be worn outside the pants, to make a snug fit at the bottom. Cover with rows of feathers the same as on the pants. Use brown for back and sides, with red for the breast.

Cut foundation for tail from wrapping paper, size as indicated on Fig. I. Wire around sides and bottom, attaching the wire with Scotch tape. Using pattern K, make wings in same way as tail. Cut a slit as indicated on pattern, Fig. L, overlap and paste before covering with feathers. Sew completed wings to shoulders and back of body as necessary. Sew ribbons to wings so that they may be tied in place, Fig. L.

Make a cap foundation of.a double thickness 5" in front, 7" in back, shaped as Fig. M.  Stitch around bottom and gather with needle and thread at top.* Cut beak, Fig. N, from glazed paper. Stitch or paste to front of cap.
Cut strips of brown 1/2" wide into feathers 2" deep, 3/4" wide. Paste to cap, following contour of head. Begin at back and work to front.

Crush enough black crepe paper* to cover the foundation garment with a double thickness.

For this, the crepe paper is used with the grain of the paper going across instead of up and down.

Using the garment as a pattern, cut the crepe paper, Fig. A.* Cut sleeves separately. Put two thicknesses together for each part and stitch all seams. Turn. Sew sleeves to armholes, turn under at bottom. Slip body over foundation. Sew around neck, armholes, at back opening and at bottom of feet. Sew soles in place, covering the extra paper which was turned under.

Make the front of body from a double thickness of white crushed crepe paper* like a large bib, Fig. B. Sew I" wide fringe* around the edge. Sew to body at neck and 3" or 4" down each side.

For head, cut a double thickness strip of white crepe paper about 9" wide and long enough to fit head size. Seam short ends. Cut out in front to fit face, Fig. C. Stitch around opening. Gather at top and turn, stitch I" wide white fringe* around face opening. Cut pieces of black crepe paper 4" wide, 6" long. Fold in half across the grain but do not crease. Gather open ends with needle and thread. Pull up gathers to make rounded ears, Fig. D. Sew to cap. Sew narrow ribbons to tie head in place. Cut a double thickness -of white crepe about 6" long, 2 1/2" wide shaped like Fig. E. Sew 1h"
wide white fringe around edge. Cut circles of black crepe and paste in place. Cut small round holes in the center. Attach hat elastic.

To make the paws, draw around hands with fingers spread out fot the pattern, Fig. F. Cut 4 thicknesses of black and 2 oval pieces of white. Stitch double thickness of white to double- thickness of black, then, with the white in, stitch the four thicknesses of black together and turn. Repeat for other hand.

Make a 2" wide fringe of black*. Wind around a 4" piece of wire to make a full fluffy tail, Fig. G. Sew to costume.

The red ribbon bow may be tied on after the costume has been put on.

Next he gets into the coat through the open back, which is attached by means of screw eyes in slots, a quarter turn locking each. An amusing feature will be a crank at the back, operating a holiday rattle on the inside. On the front of the coat other devices can be installed, such as radio dials, ammeters, push buttons, etc. The last could be made to sound a real buzzer, with a flashlight battery fastened to the frame of the coat inside.
