Bringing Halloween Into The Classroom

When Halloween comes kids get excited, very excited. So why not use that excitement to enhance their learning at school? Halloween provides a wonderful opportunity to motivate kids in the classroom.Halloween activities and Halloween games can be used in different subjects and will get kids performing enthusiastically in math, spelling, writing and reading.

Listed below are a few suggestions for using Halloween as a stimulus at school.

Halloween Math

Predicting Pumpkin Measurements

Introduce a few pumpkins to the classroom and you can get kids, estimating and comparing mass, circumferences, diameters and heights. Use three – five pumpkins and label each with a letter.

Have children record their estimated mass, circumference, diameter and height for each. Children can also record the order of the pumpkins from lightest to heaviest and from smallest circumference to largest. The same can be done for diameter and height. Then have the students measure and record these things. Children can then compare their estimates with the actual measures.

Halloween Counting

Play the old favorite counting game Buzz replacing the word “Buzz” with a Halloween word. Use “Boo” or “Scary” instead. Children count around a circle but replace the number 7, every multiple of 7 and every number containing a digit 7 with the word “Boo”. If a child says the number instead of saying “Boo” they are out. This is a challenging game and it requires concentration and a knowledge of multiples. Trying playing it with other digits instead of 7, e.g. 5 or 9.

Halloween Problems and Brain Teasers

Number problems can also be made much more interesting by using Halloween themed characters and situations. Here are a few to try.

Zelda the witch has all of her cats and all of her owls in the house. She has 9 animals in the house and they have 30 legs altogether. How many cats and how many owls does she have?

Frankenstein has 15 shirts in his wardrobe. They are all black or blue. He has 7 more black shirts than blue ones. How many blue shirts does he have?

Dracula, Frankenstein, Mummy, Gilda and Zelda are all having a Halloween party. Each of them has given an invitation to all of the others. How many invitations have been given out?

Halloween Word Activities and Spelling Activities

Letting children play with words is a great way to develop spelling skills and reading skills. Try these games to develop and extend children’s spelling skills.

Black Cat

Kids will want to play this game over and over again even though it is really just a version of a spelling bee. You can use Halloween themed words or use words that the children are learning to spell. Children stand in a circle. The teacher gives a word for the children to spell and nominates the person to start. Children give one letter at a time going in a clockwise direction. The child who is after the person who says the last letter says ‘Black Cat’. The next child is out and sits down. If a child says a wrong letter, he is out and sits down also. Then the next person gives the correct letter. When the word is completed, the teacher gives the next word and play continues around the circle. The last child standing is the winner. This one is really worth trying as it moves quite quickly and kids really love to play.

Halloween Hangman

Hangman is a popular spelling game that tends to be particularly appropriate for Halloween. Use Halloween themed words or for a more interesting version try using a whole sentence. Simply make up a Halloween sentence, e.g. Ghosts, mummies, witches and zombies chased the frightened children all over the haunted house. Draw the dashes for each letter or each word, leaving spaces between the words. Then you are ready to start. Just fill in all instances of each letter that the children give. A great writing activity is to get the children to write interesting sentences that can be used for the Hangman sentence.

Halloween Sentence Jumble

After children have written their own Halloween sentences as suggested above. Play Sentence Jumble by writing the sentences in a long string with no breaks between the words. This creates an interesting puzzle for children to decipher. They have to rewrite the sentence putting in the breaks. A more advanced version of this is to run the words together and then break the letters up into groups of three, four or five letters. This makes an even more difficult word puzzle. Here is one for you to try.

Jumbled Letters

Another simple Halloween word puzzle is to jumble the letters of Halloween words and have children compete to see who can unjumble them to find all of the words first.

There are many, many different ways to incorporate Halloween into your school program. Hope the ideas above help to make Halloween more fun for your students. Happy Halloween!

Halloween decorations should be eerie, fun and scary. Here is a wonderful Halloween craft we have found for you. If your house has some bushes at the front, then this Halloween craft is sure to make you real popular in your area. First, take a white plain sheet and fold it into half. Place a few newspapers inside the fold. Using some black fabric paint of a black marker, draw a ghost face on the sheet and leave to dry. once its dry, hang it around your bushes and tightly secure it with clothespin at the back.

Another art and craft Halloween idea is to make your house look really scary and festive by hanging luminaries. First, take any brown lunch bag and use orange paint to paint it. Use an X-acto knife or a pair of scissors to cut out a pumpkin face. Make sure its scary. Fill sand at the bottom for about half an inch and take a tea light or a votive candle and submerge it at the bottom. Make a number of such luminaries and line your walkway with them for the trick or treat night.

Another arts and craft idea for Halloween is to drape your home with fun ghost or pumpkin garlands. These garlands are really easy to make. You require some white construction paper if you are making ghosts or orange construction paper if you are making pumpkins. Draw your ghost or pumpkin on the paper using a pencil or pen. Quick And Easy Halloween Decorations

Need some quick Halloween decorations, that even the kids can help with? Here are three great Halloween decorating ideas using easy to find, inexpensive materials.

Craft Foam Creepies

Craft foam is sold in sheets at the craft store in a whole array of colors. It is similar to construction paper, but made of thin, durable foam you can easily cut with scissors. Trace simple Halloween shapes onto the backside of the foam sheets and cut out. Use contrasting colors and a glue stick to add details such as a jack o lantern face, red eyes on a bat, or the face of a silly ghost. You can make these cutouts as large or as small as you want. Hang them in windows or hang them with clear thread form curtain rods, doorways, or in your front entry. (This works really well with bats, hang them from the tips of each wing, and one place on the body to make them appear to be flying) These can even be used on protected porches as the foam is water resistant.

Graveyard

A graveyard near your front walk is a creepy and creative touch to the Halloween spirit. We used scrap pieces of plywood and siding and cut them into rectangles with the tops rounded, like a gravestone. We first painted them gray, then washed over them with a watery white paint for age and spook factor. We used black paint to add amusing names and epitaphs, such as “I.M. Gone” or “Ben Dismembered”. Screw a wooded stake to the back and pound into the ground. I like to group them together on an area of grass, then rope them off with chains, add a few pumpkins (and in my neck of the woods, tumbleweeds are a nice touch) and line the edge of your “graveyard” with lighted jackolanterns for Hallows Eve. My kids have the lost fun with this!

Giant spiders and webs

First of all, set the stage for your spiders by picking up some webbing…it is really cheap, and stretches a LONG way! Corners of rooms or porches, or stretched over a door are great effects. To make the spiders, pick up large black pom poms and large black chenille stems from the craft store. Take 4 chenille stems and twist them together in the middle. This creates the eight legs. Bend the stems downward about halfway down each leg. Now use tacky glue or a glue gun (glue gun is my choice as it sets almost instantly, but the adult must handle this!) to secure a large pom pom in the center of the legs at the twist to form the body. You can add google eyes as some do, but I prefer to cut scary red eyes from felt or craft foam and glue on. Set your spiders in their webs, and you can bend the leg tips to attach them to a picture frame or a lamp chain. Remember, with this project, the bigger, the better, so buy the bargest legs and pom poms you can find!

Three great projects for Halloween, make enough of any of these and you can turn your home into a haunted house without the huge price tag. (Don’t forget to pack them away for next year!)

Fashionable But Inexpensive Halloween Decoration Ideas

You do not have to be a good crafter to be able to make many special Halloween items that will make your holiday joyful. Halloween suggests pictures of spooky ghosts, black cats, dark witches, and flying bats.

You can recreate some of these images with fun and easy crafts.

The best part about creating Halloween crafts is that it is something that the whole family can do and it can give you some time to spend together. Lots of Halloween crafts can be made by almost any age kid. For instance, your toddler can help out and learn new skills like cutting, drawing, and coloring.

Of course, you need some crafting supplies from the store. Here is the basic craft equipment needed:

Various craft paintings: black, white, orange, etc. (pots and spraying cans) Gold and silver paint (spraying cans) Colored pipe cleaners Black, white, silver and gold markers

Obviously, most homes already have basic craft supplies like scissors, tape and glue.

So, let’s begin: it is going to be fun!

Spiders

To make these spiders, you need an egg carton.

Cut all the egg cups.

Paint them black.

Paint their eyes with white or orange paint.

Make four small holes on each side of the spiders.

Insert a black or colored pipe cleaner in each hole and stick or glue them to the spider.

Give the shape you want to the pipe cleaners

Pumpkin boxes

Find as many small pumpkin plastic containers as you want.

Fill them with candies.

Voila! Treats are ready to be given to children who will ring on your bell on Halloween Eve.

Colored Pumpkins

Here is a very special idea that will allow you to renew your Halloween decorations without having to spend a lot of money. You probably already have ceramic pumpkins. Instead of buying new Halloween ornaments, paint your old ones according to your needs: gold or silver paint for a luxurious decoration, for instance.

You may also want to paint them in black or white. With a black, white, silver or gold marker, draw Halloween shapes on these new pumpkins such as black cat, white witch, black mansion…

Children enjoy bright colors so you can paint your pumpkins in several different bright colors such as orange, green, blue, red, yellow, etc. Draw Halloween figures on these pumpkins. For teenagers ornament, paint pumpkins with metallic colors, glow-in-the-dark, glitter, etc.

Pumpkin Jar

If you already have one or more, fill a glass jar with small plastic or ceramic pumpkins; alternate pumpkins with maple berries and leaves.

Homemade Halloween Lights

Here is an almost free Halloween craft! Paint small jars in black, white and orange. Draw some Halloween shapes on them and insert a tea light candle in each jar. For instance, paint a white jar, draw Scream murderer’s eyes and mouth and voila, you have an original ghost light. Place the Halloween candles on a black tray, insert mini pumpkins, maple berries and leaves, etc.

If you have larger jars, you may paint them as well and pour in Christmas lights.

Halloween Candelabra

Paint candelabra with black paint.

Add orange wax lights.

Hang cobwebs on the candelabra for a spooky Halloween effect!

Halloween Centrepiece

You will need to use a bread basket in order to make this item.

Fill it with some maple leaves.

Add cobweb, mini pumpkins, spiders…

You may keep the basket for Thanksgiving: you will only have to replace cobweb and spiders by grapes and pine cones.

Halloween Tree

Put bare branches in a vase.

Paint small Christmas tree balls black, white, and orange.

Draw Halloween figures on them.

Hang the balls on the branches.

You may also create your own Halloween tree ornaments such as ghosts, black cat, witches, and spiders cut out cardboard. Paint them and hang them on the tree.

Tip: make a uncommon Halloween garland with popcorn painted orange.

Witch Hat

If you still have a pointy black hat from last year, reuse it by sticking Halloween items such as fake hands, spiders, cobwebs or other spooky items and pin it to the front door.

Happy Halloween!

Halloween Party Games

Halloween party games should carry a spooky theme to entertain all participants. This is how the many games available for you to play at the occasion are. Halloween is a very important and grave celebration which is planned months in advance to achieve the most fascinating party that can kill anyone. You get to think of various ideas as you put your thinking cap on. The celebration is meant to bring out creativity and at the same time seek to scare as many people as possible to experience the ultimate fun. Perhaps the most outstanding feature about a Halloween party are the costumes which can be used to play many Halloween party games.

Halloween party games are many and they include the following word scramble, eyeball hunt game, zombie game, pumpkin passing game, memory game, Halloween feel box and the list goes on. One of the most interesting games to play is the zombie game and it involves the participants lying down motionless acting as zombies and one person will do all it takes to have them smile or wiggle without touching them. The zombie that will be the hardest to impress will win the game. You will realize that games come in many categories and there are those meant for children. There are Halloween party games that will be played by adults and bring so much fun to the party. Therefore, get to study  particular games well so that you can fully be entertained by it.

You can also think of a game and include it at a Halloween party. Your game must make sense and manage to entertain majority of the attendants. Some of the greatest games are brought fourth by ordinary people who have a keen interest to please people. Also, you can add a twist to the already existing games for more fun at the party. While doing this, do not make the game dull but, more interesting. Another game that is going to add some black sizzle to your haunted party is the Halloween memory game. It is a fun game that will test the memories of your guests. You will put some items on a tray and let your party mates study them for around 30 seconds. Then, remove the items and everyone will write down the items they remember.

The person who remembers most of the items will get to walk away as the champion. This game is also good for the overall memory of children because it stimulates their memory faculties and they can get to remember things more often. Do not include Halloween party games that are dangerous for your party and this means that they might be a bit extreme. Keep games for children very light so that they can have fun in the most natural way. Before you go ahead with any game, know the rules that are involved. This will enable you correct somebody who may have done contrary to the stipulated rules even if they know how the game is played.

Organizing your Halloween Party

Halloween is a fun holiday that begs for having a creepy costume party. But getting such an event together requires some planning and organizing.

First Things First

Step one in organizing your Halloween party is deciding what kind of party you are going to have. Are you going to have a themed party or just a fun bash? Is it going to be a potluck or are you going to try to do it all yourself? Hint: Trying to do it all yourself not such a great idea. It makes your life a whole lot easier and allows you to have more fun if it is a potluck. Believe it or not, it can also make it more fun for your guests. Some fun potluck ideas: Have everyone bring the most disgusting looking or sounding dish that they can find. However, make sure that they know it must be edible! If youre doing a themed party, have everyone bring something in keeping with the theme. For example, for a pirate party, have everyone bring a dish that has a skull and crossbones in it or on it.

So first decide what kind of Halloween party you are going to organize and how you are going to handle the food.

Make a List

Step two in organizing your Halloween party is making a list of everything that needs to get done. Just sit down and brainstorm everything that you can think of. Then go back over your list and figure out the order of what needs to get done. For example, sending out invitations should be one of the first things on your list. Organizing and buying decorations should also be near the top. Getting food ready will be at or near the end of the list. Then go back through that list one more time and organize it one step further by figuring out roughly how long each task will take you. Hint: It is better to overestimate the time it will take you than to underestimate.

Get Ready Before The Day

Okay, so this is more of a tip than a step in getting your Halloween party organized. But it is important so bear with me. In order to minimize your stress and to make the party more fun for you, get as much as possible organized before the actual day of the party. This includes making as much of the food as you can before the day of the party. If you can make it and freeze it, by all means, do it. This also means cleaning whatever areas of your house you feel need to be cleaned beforehand. A few more things you can do before the day of the party: wash dishes, decorate, setup tables and put out anything non-perishable the night before.

And the most important tip of all: Have FUN!

Happy Halloween!

Pot-luck Halloween Party Theme

Children favorite holidays are Saint Nicholas (in Belgium) or Christmas, because of the gifts; Carnival (in Europe) because of the costumes, parties and parades; and Halloween.

Why do they love Halloween? Adults assume that children love Halloween because children generally love candy.

But children do not only love the abundance of candy at Halloween. They love partying, wearing costumes, watching torchlight parades…

Adults also love Halloween. Especially Halloween parties.

While reading lots of articles dedicated to Halloween, I noticed that people talk about Halloween parties for children or Halloween parties for adults. But they seldom talk about Halloween parties for everyone.

So this year, why not going for a Halloween party for everyone, adults and children?

Obviously, Halloween family parties are often organized: when the trick or treating is over, children come home with their candies and after verifying the quality of the sweets they received, everybody goes in the living room. While drinking pumpkin juice, parents tell

children some Halloween stories.

But there is a way to make your Halloween evening funnier for everyone. What about a pot-luck party? What about inviting your friends and neighbours; married couples or single parents and their children?

Unfortunately, there is a major inconvenient: when she guests a party, the housewife must stay in the kitchen to ensure that everyone has something to eat and to drink and to prepare the meal.

This year, the housewife will participate and enjoy the Halloween party. The principle of this event is the following one: each guest brings different dishes: meal, dessert, pie or drink – alcoholic or not.

Prepare your Halloween party for everyone by creating invitation cards with funny Halloween decorations. Set up a costume theme. Decorate your house. Ask children to help you: they also participate to the event.

The easiest way to guest a Halloween party is by organizing a supper-table. Convert your dinner room table into a supper-table. Place the Jack-O-Lantern on its center and each of the dishes brought by your guests all around it. Each participant will serve himself.

A supper-table is also an excellent way for your guests to be able to talk to everyone and meet new people.

A smaller table in another corner of the room will become the bar area. Fun tip: carve two large pumpkins and decorate them with Halloween theme and fill one of them with sangria or alcoholic punch for adults and the other one with fruit juice for the children. Decorate the drinks with Witch Eyes.

Witch Eyes recipe:

Canned peeled and drained litchis

Incorporate a black grape or a maraschino cherry into each litchi

Plan to have enough chairs for your guests and reserve some space at the center of the room to dance. Put the musical mood by creating some play lists dedicated to Halloween.

Here are some Halloween dessert ideas:

Halloween Lanterns:

Ingredients:

Montain oranges,

Chocolate mousse

Preparation:

Cut the top of each orange

Remove the pulp or the oranges

Draw eyes, a nose and a mouth as if they were pumpkins

Fill the oranges with chocolate mousse

Cap them with the top you cutted

Keep them in a cool place.

French Pumpkin Doughnut

Ingredients:

Cut 500 g of Hokkaido pumpkin into small cubes

2 tablespoon Sugar

2 tablespoon Soft butter

2 lightly beaten eggs

125 fl oz flour

Oil

Preparation:

Put the Hokkaido pumpkin in a pot

Cover with water and let it boil until the pumpkin is cooked and tender

Drain the pumpkin and combine with sugar, butter and eggs

Gradually add flour while beating

File a tablespoon of the mixture into hot oil for about 4-5 minutes

Serve warm.

Have a fun pot-luck Halloween party for everyone!

Cast a Spell With a Witch and Warlock Halloween Party

Here’s a truly wicked Halloween party theme invite your friends to a fancy dress witch and warlock party.

Set the scene by turning your party area into a magical cave. Drape the furniture in black sheets (this will also help to protect your furniture) and set up an altar with a Book of Shadows and some magical decorations. You can get these items from a new age shop, or make your own, covering old books and using a light fitting globe for a magic crystal ball.

To make a book of shadows, cover a large book with black paper. Open the book and lay it flat. (Don’t do this with a book you want to keep!) Glue all the pages together except the two where you opened the book. Glue two sheets of paper with spells printed on them (you can print spells off the Internet) to the open pages.

You can also paint the pages with white acrylic paint and stick on pictures of unicorns and other mythical creatures when they are dry.

Prop the book on the altar – you can use a book rest or rest it against a candle in a bottle. Add black candles in black candleholders, a pack of tarot cards and some crystals.

To make the crystal ball, place the light fitting globe side up in a round black box – the box needs to be too small for the whole globe, so that it sits up on a stand. Drape it with a silk scarf and do impromtu `readings’. If you can fix up a light in the box to switch on and make the crystal ball glow, it will look terrific.

If you have dragon or magic themed statues and ornaments, put them on display, or cut out paper dragons and mythical creatures and pin them up.

Haunt your cave by draping old white sheets or pieces of cheesecloth over helium balloons. Paint on scary faces and let them float up to the ceiling. You can also put a masks and wigs on your helium balloons and let them loose.

Decorate the corners of the room, archways and doors with fake cobwebs. You can buy fake cobwebs that spray on or stick on at a Halloween party supply store.

Use a large black laundry tub with a handle for a cauldron, and fill it with lime drink or party punch and strange plastic toy animals rats, toads, lizards. These make great party favors for the guests.

You can set your cauldron on a pile of crumpled up red and yellow cellophane paper to like a blazing fire.

Fill goblets or champagne glasses (you can use plastic champagne glasses and paint them with silver water based craft paint) with strings of brightly colored glass beads, old paste jewelry and gold chains spilling over the side. Scatter small crystals and shiny paste jewels mixed with Gummi eyeballs around the bases of the goblets. These look great set out on the food table.

You can make simple magic wands out of foot long pieces of dowel rod, or even long chopsticks. Paint the wands black and the tips gold. But if you really want to impress, go into the country and cut straight pieces of fallen branches to make wands. Bunch them in decorated large cocoa tins for your guests to play dueling games a la Harry Potter.

As the head witch or warlock, you can create a great costume that doesn’t cost too much. Make your magical hat out of a large sheet of construction paper curved into a cone shape. Cut the bottom of the cone to fit your head, tape the ends firmly in place and paint black. While the paint is still wet, sprinkle the hat with glitter dust and let it dry. You can also cover your hat with silver and gold cut out stars and crescent moons.

Make a simple robe out of length of dark coloured sheeting or satin, 60 inches by 120 inches. Fold the fabric in half lengthways, and cut an opening unto the fold in the upper piece of cloth. Cut a shallow neckline to fit your neck. You can hem the edges to make it look neat. Sew the sides of the robe up to 16-20 inches from your armpits (adjust for your size). Clasp the front neck edges of the robe with a paste brooch in a magical design, such as a pentacle.

Now invite every witch and warlock you know to this great Halloween party theme!
